A Tribute to Angie Stone: The Trailblazing Hip Hop and R&B Legend Who Left an Indelible Mark on Music
Forever Grateful
The world of music has lost a true legend. With a heavy heart, I share the devastating news of the passing of Angie Stone, a trailblazer whose contributions to hip hop and R&B left an everlasting impact. Angie was more than just a singer; she was the soundtrack to so many of our lives, including mine. Her music was a reflection of raw emotion, resilience, and unapologetic truth, resonating deeply with anyone who ever listened. I can only imagine the pain her family must be enduring, and I extend my deepest condolences to them during this incredibly difficult time.
Angie Stone was a pioneer, a true icon who broke barriers and paved the way for future generations of artists. She began her journey in the late 1970s as a member of The Sequence, the first all-female rap group signed to Sugar Hill Records. Their groundbreaking song, “Funk You Up,” not only became a classic but also influenced countless artists who followed in her footsteps. It’s incredible to think about how her work continues to live on, with her music being sampled by the likes of Bruno Mars in “Uptown Funk” and Dr. Dre in “Keep Their Heads Ringin’.” Angie’s early career was just the beginning of a legacy that would span decades.
In the late 1990s, Angie embarked on a solo career, solidifying her place as one of the most soulful voices in R&B. Her debut album, “Black Diamond,” went gold in the U.S., proving that her talent was undeniable. But it was her 2001 hit, “Wish I Didn’t Miss You,” that truly cemented her status as a household name. That song, with its hauntingly beautiful melody and deeply personal lyrics, became the story of so many lives—mine included. Angie had a way of capturing the pain and the beauty of love in a way that felt universal, yet deeply personal.
Throughout her career, Angie was celebrated with numerous accolades, including three Grammy Awards and two Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards. But to her fans, her greatest achievement was the way she connected with us through her music. She was unapologetically herself, and her authenticity resonated with everyone who listened.
Tragically, Angie’s life was cut short in a car accident on Interstate 65 in Montgomery County, Alabama. She had just finished a performance in Montgomery when the sprinter van carrying her, her crew, and backup singers was involved in a crash. At 63 years old, she was still performing, still sharing her gift with the world. It’s a heartbreaking reminder of how fragile life can be.
Angie is survived by her children, Michael and Diamond, and her two grandchildren. My heart goes out to them and everyone who loved her. While her physical presence is gone, her music, her spirit, and her legacy will live on.
To Angie Stone, thank you for the music that became the soundtrack of my life. Thank you for being a trailblazer, for being bold, and for being a voice for so many of us. You may be gone, but you will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, dear one.
To her family, I can only imagine the pain of losing such an incredible woman. But I hope you find comfort in knowing that Angie’s music touched hearts around the world. She was a legend, a icon, and a blessing to us all. Let’s keep her memory alive by celebrating her life and the music that will forever be a part of us.
😔 Can’t believe that she’s gone
