An Open Letter to Senator Van Hollen: Thank You for Your Bravery. Who Will Stand With You?
Dear Senator Chris Van Hollen,
We see you. And we thank you.
Your courage and moral clarity in the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia is exactly the kind of leadership this moment demands. Mr. Garcia, a Maryland resident who was supposed to be protected by a 2019 court order, was wrongfully deported to El Salvador and is now trapped in the notorious CECOT prison. You didn’t just issue a statement. You demanded answers. You called for justice. You even offered to fly to El Salvador yourself to secure Mr. Garcia’s release. We also are grateful that Rep. Yassamin Ansari, D-Ariz., and Rep. Maxwell Frost, D-Fla., are standing with you and are willing to travel to El Salvador with you.
That is what bravery looks like.
But now, the question must be asked: Where is everyone else?
Where are the Democrats who say they care about human rights? Where are the leaders who promised to stand against the Trump-era cruelty? Because Kilmar’s deportation isn’t an isolated mistake—it’s part of a dangerous pattern. And he is not alone.
Merwil Gutiérrez, a teenage boy, wasn’t even the intended ICE target. But he was deported anyway. Now he’s being held in a maximum-security prison in El Salvador. And here’s the kicker—the Trump administration admitted they got the wrong person.
This is a moral emergency. It’s also a constitutional one. The U.S. government promised these individuals protection, then broke that promise and threw them into the jaws of a corrupt, authoritarian prison system.
So again we ask: Where are the rest of you?
This is the moment for Democratic leadership to find their voice—and their backbone. We demand a congressional delegation. We demand action. We demand that our leaders go to El Salvador and bring our people home.
Senator Van Hollen has made it clear where he stands. Rep. Yassamin Ansari and Rep. Maxwell Frost have pledged their support.
Will anyone stand else stand with them?
