A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake rocked parts of Southeast Asia today, striking near Mandalay, Myanmar, and sending violent tremors across the region — including into Thailand’s capital city of Bangkok. The quake caused widespread panic, destruction, and tragic loss of life.
In Bangkok, a 30-story high-rise under construction crumbled under the force of the quake, killing at least two people and trapping an unknown number beneath the rubble. Emergency crews are racing against time to rescue survivors. The greater Bangkok metro area, home to more than 17 million people, experienced building evacuations and aftershock fears.
Meanwhile, in Myanmar, at least eight people have been confirmed dead after a building collapse in Mandalay. Historic sites, including the former royal palace, suffered damage. The Myanmar government has declared a state of emergency in six regions and is calling for international aid.
Tremors were felt as far as China’s Yunnan and Sichuan provinces.
Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has urged the public to remain calm and alert, warning that aftershocks are likely.
