Senator Lisa Murkowski, the “moderate” Republican who loves to remind us she’s not like the others, just handed the deciding vote to a legislative monstrosity that will kneecap the most vulnerable Americans for decades to come. With a coffee in one hand and political cowardice in the other, she flipped her vote after an all-night pressure campaign from GOP leadership and gave Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” a Senate win.
You know what’s not beautiful? Watching a woman—a woman—vote for a bill that guts Medicaid, slashes food assistance, and all but guarantees the closure of hospitals and nursing homes in rural and Indigenous communities. I don’t care how many Alaska carve-outs she begged for behind closed doors. What matters is what she just did to the rest of us.
This bill is a blueprint for slow-motion annihilation. The pain won’t hit all at once—it’s designed to bleed people out over years. But it will hit. It will close nursing homes. It will drive hospitals to bankruptcy. And yes, it will starve children.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro wasn’t being dramatic when he said if this bill passes, his state won’t even be able to offer SNAP. That’s millions of people—families, seniors, veterans—suddenly without the most basic food assistance. Imagine looking a disabled veteran in the eye and saying, “Sorry, no groceries this month. We had to make room for a whaling tax credit in Alaska.”
And Murkowski knows this. Every single one of them does. They’ve seen the data. They’ve read the projections. They just don’t care.
It still needs to go back to the House, where some of the language will likely be revised—because apparently even cruelty has to be finely tuned. But don’t let anyone gaslight you with “This isn’t final yet” or “Let’s wait and see.” The intent is clear. The damage is already underway.
I’m grieving today. I’m grieving for the elders who will lose their homes, for the children who will go to bed hungry, for the disabled folks who will be told once again that their lives are too expensive to protect. And yes, I’m furious that it was a woman who tipped the scale. Because when one of us votes for the suffering of so many others, it’s not bipartisanship. It’s betrayal.
And for what? A moment in Trump’s spotlight? A slightly longer leash in the next election cycle?
The GOP loves to talk about “sacrifice.” Funny how it’s always you and me doing the sacrificing.
But don’t worry. Lisa Murkowski will be fine. Her government healthcare plan still covers vision and dental. And lunch.
