Earlier today, FAFO Newscast reported breaking news of a powerful earthquake that struck Myanmar and was felt across Southeast Asia, including Thailand. Now, as more details emerge, the scope of the devastation is becoming heartbreakingly clear.
At least 144 people are confirmed dead in Myanmar, with over 700 injured following the 7.7 magnitude quake and a 6.4 aftershock that rocked the region just outside of Mandalay. Entire neighborhoods have been reduced to rubble. Bridges and infrastructure have collapsed. Hospitals are overwhelmed. The military government has declared a state of emergency in six regions, including Mandalay and Naypyidaw.
In Bangkok, Thailand, the tremors triggered the collapse of a 30-story building under construction, leaving at least eight dead and many more trapped under debris. Emergency crews are working around the clock in what authorities have now declared an emergency zone.
The quake was felt as far as India, China, Laos, and Vietnam, showing just how powerful and widespread the impact is.
