Saturday night on Capitol Hill, the Senate narrowly voted to begin debate on President Trump’s sweeping domestic policy bill—nicknamed the “Big Beautiful Bill”—in a 51–49 party-line vote.
Republicans ultimately didn’t need Vice President JD Vance to break a tie. That’s because Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI), who had initially vowed to block the measure, flipped his vote at the last minute, following backroom negotiations and reported changes to Medicaid provisions and tax caps.
All Democrats voted no. The bill now moves into debate despite no full cost analysis from the Congressional Budget Office. One of the more eye-catching additions? Benefits for Alaskan whaling captains, reportedly added to win over Senator Lisa Murkowski.
What’s inside the bill?
• Massive tax cuts for the wealthy
• Rollbacks of climate, labor, and education protections
• DEI bans and limits on reproductive rights
• “Family incentives” critics call dog whistles for Christian nationalism
• Increased surveillance powers with vague cybersecurity language
Massive cuts to Medicaid
We’re watching this closely. The fight over amendments starts next week. The stakes? Sky-high.
Terrible. Just terrible….
They can FRO!!! They have the house and the senate and guess what THEY could stop ✋ all of this chaos, carnage, and death of a nation and CHOOSE NOT TO !!
Where can we find a little more detailed information on the Senate changes to the bill? I can’t read the whole 930 pg bill tonight but would like to see the synopsis. Thank you for all you post 💜. HA just saw where the Senate Dems are demanding a full read of the bill. They figure that will take at least 12 hrs 👍👍😴
