A recent report revealed that the administration abruptly terminated funding for a National Institutes of Health (NIH) research grant aimed at training early-career clinicians to identify and support pregnant women experiencing intimate partner violence. The justification? The administration lumped the study into its sweeping attack on “diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI)” initiatives—effectively claiming that protecting pregnant women from abuse is somehow discriminatory.
Here’s the thing: this is a life-or-death issue. Homicide, overwhelmingly at the hands of an abusive partner, is the leading cause of death among pregnant and postpartum women in the U.S. Cutting funding for research that could prevent these deaths is intentional cruelty.
The Bigger Picture: A War on Vulnerable Women
This move isn’t happening in isolation. The Trump administration has been systematically cutting funding for maternal health programs, particularly those addressing the staggering maternal mortality rates among Black and Indigenous women. The same administration that overturned Roe v. Wade, restricting bodily autonomy, is now ensuring that pregnant women in violent situations have fewer protections.
It’s no coincidence that these attacks disproportionately affect marginalized communities. The same people who scream about being “pro-life” have no problem letting women die—especially women of color—when their lives depend on access to medical care and protection from abuse.
What Happens Next?
We need to be clear about what’s happening here. This isn’t just another bureaucratic funding cut—it’s a direct assault on public health under the guise of fighting so-called “woke” policies. This administration is dismantling protections for the most vulnerable and using buzzwords to justify it.
FAFO Newscast will continue to follow this issue, and we’ll be breaking it all down in an upcoming podcast episode. In the meantime, we urge you to speak out, spread awareness, and support organizations that continue to fight for the rights and safety of pregnant women.
